transition to year 7

Copperfield College is proud of our extensive transition program designed to assist students make a seamless transition into secondary school. We work with the local primary schools in developing challenging and engaging activities and hands on tasks that allow primary school students the opportunity to experience and familiarise themselves with secondary schooling at Copperfield College. We start our transition program well before students enter year 7, working with students from grade prep through to grade 6. By the time students enter year 7 they have already visited Copperfield College on numerous occasions, each time familiarising themselves with the staff, students and college surroundings..

We realise the challenges and mixed emotions many students and parents experience when they are entering secondary schooling, and understand the importance of ensuring a smooth transition from primary to secondary school by providing a Safe, Friendly & Supportive Learning and Teaching Environment.

We are committed to building positive working partnerships between the college, parents and students, and the wider community.
Some initiatives we have implemented to welcome new students to the college and assist with the transition from primary to secondary school are;

Each junior campus is structured around the team-based approach.

Two teams on each junior campus house Years 7 and 8 students, who are taught by a core group of teachers following Middle Years principles.

Each team is lead by two Team Leaders with oversight by a Year 7/8 Campus Leader.

The aim is to develop an integrated, negotiated curriculum that develops both students’ self and peer assessment skills.

We talk to groups of prospective parents.

We have a Transition Leader who works with the primary schools, parents and students to ensure a smooth transition for your child, from primary to secondary school.

We provide opportunities for primary school students to come to the college to gain "hands on" experience in various subjects and be involved in special projects/activities.

We visit local primary schools with current Copperfield College students to talk about aspects of secondary school life and their experiences.

We conduct a well-planned and informative Orientation Day where students meet and work with their class teachers, peers and Team Leaders.

Year 7 camp in term 1 designed to assist students form friendships with other students and teachers.
